Shibli’s sharp prose, however, refuses this static notion of history. In the Anglo-American context, the Nakba (when recognized at all) is presented in mainstream discourse as a singular episode confined to the past. This term means catastrophe in Arabic and describes the Palestinian experience of Israel’s 1948 War of Independence, which saw over seven hundred thousand people displaced and exiled from their homes. ![]() The event that binds the book’s temporal halves is the Nakba. Adania Shibli’s sparse, unnerving, and haunting novella Minor Detail is a story divided in two seemingly distinct acts, past and present. ![]()

Williams makes a significant contribution to this conversation by answering the difficult questions this generation fearlessly poses. Williams wrote in the Introduction to this 2018 book, Too often this subject is approached as if Black presence in the Bible is a rarity rather than the standard. Young people are becoming increasingly curious about what role, if any, did people of African descent play in biblical history? Or, if the Bible is devoid of Black presence, and is merely a book by Europeans, about Europeans and for Europeans to the exclusion of other races and ethnicities? An exquisite example of the artist’s draftsmanship, this sheet was created for the printmaker Leopold Löwenstam, who regularly etched Alma-Tadema’s compositions, and a related print was published in 1880. Visually, its curved form brings several figures into proximity without implying a specific narrative. In this case, the form is borrowed from a bench-shaped memorial-tomb on the Via dei Sepolcri at Pompeii. The curved marble bench, or exedra, bears a Latin inscription that refers to the Emperor Hadrian and demonstrates how the artist skillfully adapted archaeological sources to add authenticity. The stillness of the seated forms contrasts with the suggested movement of a young couple strolling on a path at right. At left, two young men sit in companionable contemplation near an older bearded figure whose pose and expression convey stoicism. Known for evocative recreations of the ancient world, Alma-Tadema here represents Roman men and women of different ages enjoying a warm fall day. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That combined with my dinner dress uniform had been downright suffocating. Not enough to go without my TENS unit-I'd been clinging to that fucker since breakfast-but it helped.Īt least I wasn't wearing a back brace this year. On the other hand, standing up straight and pulling in my midsection did take some of the strain off my back. ![]() ![]() ![]() I’m sure this isn’t uncommon, but as an adult I have a hang-up where I feel like I should be reading adult books (not as much of a hang-up as when I try to read romance, but that’s another review) but I definitely feel a stigma.
